Hyaline ‘Layered’ Font – Exclusive Free Download
Clipper was a big success for designer Dominc Le-Hair in 2009, an exclusive download on imjustcreative. A few emails between Font Soup and Dominic and we are ready to have our own exclusive download. I’ll let Dominic explain Hyaline.
“I am a 32 year old Graphic Designer living and working in Peterborough, UK. I left Teesside University in 2001 with a BA Honours in Graphic Design.
I like to work on personal projects in my spare time as there are less restrictions than with most of the client briefs in my job. I try to be as original as possible with my work and like to occasionally combine hands-on media with digital techniques. I am inspired by designers who experiment with type, such as Craig Ward, Autobahn and Handmade Font.
About Hyaline
Originally inspired by Ultrasound scans and X-rays, Hyaline is a pixel style font that is only legible when the two individual fonts; Hyaline 1 and Hyaline 2 are layered one on top of the other.
The name Hyaline refers to a substance with a glass-like appearance. I chose to call it this as the fonts work well together when overlayed and the opacities of each are experimented with. They also work well together at 100% opacity.
Hyaline 1 consists of identical squares for each glyph and Hyaline 2 is made up of horizontal and vertical shapes that resemble tetris blocks or QR codes used in augmented reality. When layered on top of Hyaline 1, these blocks act as the negative shapes of a font taking ‘bites’ out of the square shapes to form letters.
When creating the fonts, I have set the kerning on Hyaline 2 so some of the glyphs overlap, creating interesting effects that alter depending on the adjacent letters, colours and the amount of opacity applied to each font. When the leading is adjusted so the top of Hyaline B sits flush with the bottom of Hyaline A, the glyphs overlap vertically creating the same effect.”
Dominic’s got more great type work on his Behance portfolio and you can follow him on twitter @DominicLe_Hair. Dominic will soon be making his Spykado font available for download, keep your eyes peeled.
